Colt "Pinch Frame" Single Action Army Revolver

Today, the Colt Single Action Army is an iconic revolver, with design features that have been well established for a century and a half. However, it wasn't always that way. The earliest Colt Single Action Army revolvers - or Peacemakers as they've become affectionately known - went through some design changes before finally landing on the final design of what we see today.
The first couple hundred SAA revolvers to come off of the production line in Hartford, Connecticut, are now known as "Pinch Frame" guns, and they're highly sought-after by Colt collectors. So, what is a pinch frame and why are they rare?
